Why Do Ye Smite Your Brother - Framed 8x10
Scripture (s): 1 Nephi 3:28-29
“And it came to pass that Laman was angry with me...and also was Lemuel, for he hearkened unto the words of Laman. Wherefore Laman and Lemuel did speak many hard words unto us, their younger brothers, and they did smite us even with a rod. And it came to pass as they smote us with a rod, behold, an angel of the Lord came and stood before them, and he spake unto them, saying: Why do ye smite your younger brother with a rod?”
Story Behind the Art
This painting was a particular challenge to me, yet it is my favorite one. I felt inspired to paint it, but it was the first major religious painting I ever attempted, and luckily, I didn’t know how hard it would be or I might still be waiting for my skill level to equal the task. As with any calling, God’s grace is sufficient no matter how weak or unqualified we are, and His “strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) I knew that painting was given to me and the Savior expected me to paint it, so I did, over and over and over during more hours than I am willing to admit to. I learned that our effort is what the Lord wants; our best effort with His grace is sufficient. I have found that in the process of working for the Lord, the Lord works on us and molds us into the artists we need to be. When we are on His errand, we are entitled to His help and shouldn’t wait until we are “good enough” to begin.
